About the Piece

Love Letter

Love Letter is a meditative and emotional ballad written for orchestra. The piece was inspired by Gershwin’s orchestra version of ‘Someone to Watch Over Me.’ The jazz harmony gives this work the feeling of bittersweet. By featuring the different soloists in the orchestra, the composer explores various color palettes that the orchestra can offer. This new work was commissioned by the Michigan State University Concert Orchestra (directed by Dr. Katherine Kilburn) as a winner of the 2022 MSU Jere Hutcheson Composition Competition for Large Ensemble. I want to dedicate this piece to my deeply beloved mother.
